“Are you girls ready?” Delilah asked, shielding her face from the sun.

Elise stared up at the two-story old farmhouse in the middle of the Hawthorne property. She’d grown up here, she didn’t remember any other home or anyone else who had ever cared for or loved her. But being back here with her sisters, knowing Milly wasn’t on the other side of those doors, now more than ever Elise wanted her inside so she could ask all the questions this folder had produced.

All Elise could hope for was that they could find what they were looking for and then they’d have to deal with whatever truth they were left with.

“We won’t find what we need out here.” Sara sighed. “Let’s head in and see what we can do.”

Elise swallowed the lump in her throat as they headed toward the front door. Milly would have already put out her seasonal wreath and decorated her porch. There would be a plate of freshly baked cookies in the kitchen and each girl would be welcomed with a tight hug that would make them feel like they were home.

Death might have robbed them of the woman, but it couldn’t rob them of the lifetime of memories they’d created together.

“Should we divide and conquer?” Elise asked.

Delilah turned her key into the lock and eased the door open. “That might be best. I’m afraid if we all stay in the same room, the only thing we’d get done is crying and reminiscing.”

Sara laughed. “I’ll cry anyway. But I really hope we can find some answers in here.”

“I hope so, but if they weren’t in that safe or that folder, I don’t know where else they could be,” Elise added. “This is all still so...overwhelming.”

Elise followed her sisters inside and couldn’t help but smile. The place still smelled like flowers. Milly always had fresh flowers from her gardens in various rooms. The grand staircase in the foyer led up to the bedrooms, so Elise started toward the steps.

“I’ll go up,” she offered. “Someone can take the basement and someone can take this floor. I’ll be in Milly’s room. I know we need to clean out the whole house, but we’re in agreement that we’re looking for answers first, right?”

Both Delilah and Sara nodded.

“I’m in no hurry to sell this place,” Sara stated.

“I’m not, either,” Delilah agreed.

Elise bit the inside of her lip as emotions already threatened to overwhelm her. She had to power through. Mourning was a natural process, but there was so much to be done between going through and deciding what to keep or toss, and digging for more of the truth from their pasts.

“Then why are we selling?” Elise asked. “Nobody said we had to.”

“Well, we all have our own places now,” Delilah stated. “I mean, I guess I could stop renting that house and move back in here. I wasn’t sure where to go once my divorce goes through.”

Elise hoped the divorce didn’t go through, but that was definitely a conversation for another time.
